Question

If I’m using a RAID system that protects my data, do I still need to perform regular backups?

Answer

Yes. In most cases, a good backup policy should always be in place, unless the data being stored is transitory or unimportant – not requiring backup or archiving. In other cases, backups or archives may be required by regulation – such as in financial or medical environments. Good disaster recovery planning, as well as data security concerns, also call for an effective backup and/or archiving policy to be in place. As reliable as today’s RAID systems are protecting data, they can’t protect against vandalism, theft, flood, fire, tornados, etc. The most reliable backup policies generally include an ‘off-site’ requirement for the backed up data.
