Question |
Do all RAID
levels protect against data loss? |
Answer |
No. Of the
most popular RAID levels, only RAID 1, 5, 6, and 10
are designed to protect data after a disk drive
failure. RAID level 0, while not offering data
protection, is still popular in certain applications
(such as high resolution video capture and editing)
since it usually offers the highest performance of
all RAID levels. Before selecting a RAID 0
configuration, be certain that potential data loss
would only represent an ‘inconvenience’ and not
a catastrophe. Some applications, such as video
capturing and editing, have the original data on
tape – so that if the RAID 0 data is lost due to a
drive failure, the original data can be restored
from the source tape or other storage media. |
